Building a Digital Library

Learners are changing and more times than not you will find younger learners with an electronic device in their hands rather than a book.  We would like to provide our readers with both. You will begin to notice links on the side of my blog that will help  you to build a digital library for your developing….or developed…..reader.

Please notice the link to WeGiveBooks, both the website and the Facebook page. Also, please consider downloading the free application, MeeGenius,  for iPad or iTouch.  All of these offer free digital books. Be sure to watch for more.

Books We Have READ

One of the teachers suggested that we add a widget to our library blog to keep the community and students informed as to how many books and words we have read. Thinking that was a great idea, I have added the widget below. Just watch that count rise week after week.

Friday Frenzy!

Today was a busy day in the library! Thank goodness I have some wonderful students that love to help me shelve books and keep them in order. The hot books in the library right now are ANY of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books by Jeff Kinney. I have a waiting list for those books at all times! Of course, some of the classics such as Old Yeller, the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mystery books are in demand, as well as Hank the Cowdog books, Little House on the Prairie books, and yes, the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey! The younger students enjoy picture books such as the Clifford books and books by Jan Brett, Tomie DePaola, and Patricia Polacco. Of course some of the easier chapter books such as the Junie B. Jones and Bailey School Kid series are checked out a lot. I am so blessed to have the privilege of seeing students get excited about reading, or coming in to do some research on one of the computers. We have the BEST students in the world at White Oak Elementary! I will miss our fifth graders next year as they step up to the next level of Middle School, but am looking forward to a new group of kindergarteners in August. My how time flies!

New Beginnings

margereadingmeezanimatedbodyshot175x233Hello everyone!  My name is Shaynee Elder, and I am the librarian at White Oak Elementary School.   This is my first blog.  I can’t believe the school year is about to come to an end!   The students have been reading up a storm all year long.  I enjoy seeing them each day turning a new page in the story of their lives.
